But a British start-up is already \u2018on the case\u2019 for low emission cattle.<\/p>\n<p>Four big global systems must adapt, says the IPCC. Energy, cities, industry and land use are the prime carbon generators. While it acknowledged the big decisions were in the hands of politicians, ordinary consumers, said the IPCC, could do their bit by buying less meat, milk, cheese and butter \u2013 all products of the planet\u2019s 1 billion methane-belching cattle.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s interesting to see a British agtech start-up developing an idea that, if initial trials are sustained, could reduce methane emissions from cattle by a factor of 85 &#8211; thus &#8216;low emission cattle&#8217; &#8211; using a \u2018smart\u2019 nose-ring. The idea has attracted the attention of three of the biggest US meat and dairy processors and, closer to home, the device has been shortlisted as a <a href=\"https:\/\/worldagritechinnovation.com\/tesco-agri-t-jam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tesco Agri T-Jam finalist<\/a> at next week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/worldagritechinnovation.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Agri-Tech Innovation Summit<\/a> in London.<\/p>\n<p>Agro Mavens met low-emission pioneers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zelp.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ZELP<\/a> during a visit to February\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/agromavens.com\/index.php\/2018\/02\/28\/gfia-2018-top-five\/\">GFIA summit<\/a> in Abu Dhabi. Intrigued by the concept and wanting to ensure it was seen by a wider audience, we donned our <a href=\"http:\/\/agromavens.com\/index.php\/agricultural-journalism\/\">freelance hat<\/a> and produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fwi.co.uk\/livestock\/smart-cattle-nose-ring-can-convert-convert-80-percent-belched-methane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an article for the British ag title<\/a>, Farmers Weekly.<\/p>\n<p>We also encouraged them to put forward an entry for the \u2018Agri T-Jam\u2019 technology search, run by British food retailer Tesco. Together with its supply partners, Tesco is seeking innovative, breakthrough technologies and solutions to improve its supply chain and help provide affordable, sustainable and healthy food.<\/p>\n<p>Just ten companies are invited to present to a panel comprising Tesco representatives and agribusiness leaders.
